Mountainous Guizhou province is looking to hire 150 experienced teachers who have already retired to go teach in its remote villages for one year, on a volunteer-teaching program whose goal is to raise the level of rural schools.
The retirees need to be in good health and no older than 65, and at the intermediate level or higher. Guizhou now has around 190,000 teachers in rural villages, but, even though they can meet certain demands, many remote schools do not have enough teachers for each discipline, according to Zhou Yulin, deputy director of the provincial Education Dept's teaching office.
The volunteers will get the necessary basic accommodations from each schools and the Guizhou Youth Volunteer Service Foundation will provide an allowance of 1200 yuan a month, while an insurance company will provide personal accident coverage for the year.
